Emersonian hymns, op. 2b

Randall Black, tenor
Marie Taylor, piano

Though "To Ellen" is a love poem, most of these songs reflect Emerson's philosophical passions. For that reason, the strong statements of belief embodied in the poems led Baber to call them hymns; in several, the style also is hymn-like. "Terminus," the most popular and mature of the songs, is very declamatory in character, making it, like the others, more suitable, perhaps, for the male voice. "Terminus" also appears in the American Songs of Op. 12.
