Heartland: September Towns, Op. 73

The second Heartland, subtitled September Towns, is more autumnal and nostalgic than The Runaway Summer. Its unusual form grows out of its metaphor: a series of four or five musically-described cities and towns, revisited in later life. Like its earlier namesake, this overture is also 10 minutes in length and was also a commission from the Lexington Philharmonic. It is the composer’s favorite short orchestral work. Although written for professional musicians, it would be playable by good youth orchestras.

Scoring: 3, 2d1, 2, 2 - 4, 2, 3, 0, str.
