Like the Sinfonia, Op. 7, this is the only multi-movement large form of Baber’s youth. The composer played in a high school string trio with friends, Carmen and Ardra McKinney. They provided incidental music for PTA receptions, during which parts of this work and the Virginia Dances were first performed. In 5 movements, the style is youthful and buoyant. It is among the composer’s most frequently-performed works.
The recording is with violinist Irving Ilmer (of the Fine Arts Quartet), the composer on viola, and cellist Hirofumi Kanno, June 11, 1975.
